Great old carved wood duck decoy with glass eyes, approx. 16” x 8” x 7” with lead weight and string; considerable original appearing paint remaining; consignor’s note attached reads: “Carver: Elmer C. Schwerin, 1905-1990, Michigan – working decoys; carved in the 1930’s & 1940’s. Learned carving from Ed Schmidt, nephew of Master Carver, Ben Schmidt. Decoys were used for hunting in Saginaw Bay (Lake Huron) and Lake St. Clair in Michigan. Decoy bodies were cut from old cedar telephone poles. Heads were cut from cork or sugar pine. The weights were handmade, melted lead was poured in shallow molds & the bent wire was set in. Canvasback decoy-male-red head white back-handmade weight w/string, leaded keel”. Est.: $300-$500.
